MacTranslator Editor's Review

MacTranslator is an Open Source tool that can translate all kind of words.

After installing this tool, you have to change some settings before trying to use it, because it won't work. You have to go to the 'Preferences' panel into the 'Manage Dictionaries' section. By default, not all the dictionaries are installed, but you have there a list with all the supported ones.

In order to install the online dictionaries you need a working Internet connection. For the local ones this connection is not required.

After installing all the needed dictionaries you can use the program. All you have to do is type a search term into the search window and if the program can find any matches, it returns the results. Beside single words, the application returns phrases and collocations that include that term, as well as long phrases and examples.

The supported languages depend on the installed dictionaries. You can get the supported languages when installing a dictionary or when selecting one from the main window, in the drop down list.

Pluses: it's an easy to use dictionary.

Drawbacks / flaws: the supported languages depends on the supplied dictionaries, because the application doesn't have its own.

In conclusion: it's a pretty useful tool when you need a quick access dictionary. It's free too.
